RMS Investigations is the dedicated unit responsible for investigating all reported incidents of crime affecting both private and University property across UKZN’s five campuses. Our team of professional investigating officers is available 24/7 to handle serious incidents, providing essential services to both students and staff. We maintain a strong and well-established working relationship with the South African Police Service (SAPS) investigation unit to ensure comprehensive handling of all cases.
What We Investigate:
The Investigations section handles a range of matters, including:
- Legitimate allegations of misconduct involving University of KwaZulu-Natal staff, students, contract staff, service providers, and visitors.
- Complaints related to alleged staff and/or student misconduct, breaches of University rules or policies.
- Any incident pertaining to crime, damage, or misuse of University resources or assets, whether on or off University premises.
The Process:
When an incident is reported, RMS Investigations conducts an internal review. Importantly, all criminal cases are also reported to the SAPS. Our investigations are carried out professionally, ethically, impartially, and without bias, adhering strictly to the principle of ‘innocent until proven guilty’. We expect staff and students to fully cooperate with the investigation process, which includes being available for meetings with investigating officers and providing requested information promptly.
All complaints receive thorough investigation. Cases that are also being handled by SAPS investigators are actively followed up by RMS Investigations to ensure a comprehensive resolution.
Reporting Incidents and Providing Statements:
RMS Investigations strongly encourages all staff and students to report any incidents of crime as soon as possible. Rest assured that your report will receive our full attention and will be handled professionally. Depending on the nature of the crime, RMS Investigations may also involve the SAPS for further investigation.
In cases where students are found to be perpetrators of crime or are in violation of the University’s code of conduct, a detailed report will be forwarded to the Legal and Governance Department for appropriate action.
Students residing in both outsourced and UKZN residences are also encouraged to report any incidents to their respective Residence Advisors (RAs), who will then inform RMS Security.
Any individual found unlawfully removing University property or in possession of alcohol, narcotic drugs, firearms, or dangerous weapons will be immediately taken into custody, and the SAPS will be notified for potential criminal action.

The Investigation section relies on university rules and regulations, criminal law to define illegal and inappropriate conduct and rules of investigation. We are committed to remaining independent and removed from the disciplinary process as to ensure a fair, thorough investigation process.
